FAQ

Design a landscape plan with these best practices in mind:
  • Measure the space. Use a measuring tape to get accurate dimensions of your space. Divide the area into smaller shapes like rectangles, squares, and triangles. Multiply the width by the height to get the square footage of your area. For triangles, divide the result by two.
  • Know your yard. Consider your region’s climate, the soil type, and what time the sun hits the outdoor area.
  • Determine how you’ll use the space. Will you entertain guests there? Will you plant a vegetable garden? Will kids or pets have access to it? You can also divide the outdoor area into smaller sections for different uses.
  • Create harmony in your landscape design. Follow basic principles like proportion, unity, transition, balance, and focalization to achieve a landscape plan that’s easy on the eyes. Color, texture, line, form, and scale also play important roles in creating balance.

Draw a landscape plan using pencil and graph paper, giving a bird’s eye view of your entire outdoor area. Use another sheet of paper to draw items to scale such as plants, lawn furniture, a water fountain, or a tool shed. Cut these elements and place them on your landscape plan. Alternatively, you can quickly create free online landscape plans using our easy-to-use design tools and professionally made templates.

A landscape plan is a scaled diagram that displays how hardscape and softscape elements are arranged in an outdoor space. The aerial perspective can be used by property owners, landscapers, and contractors as a guide for outdoor construction, installation, repair, and other personal or commercial use.

Hardscape pertains to the hard, inanimate elements found in your landscape design such as wood, stone, concrete, and brick. These may be made of natural or man-made materials. Softscape, on the other hand, pertains to soft, living elements such as grass, vines, shrubs, flowers, and trees. Depending on the types of plants you choose, these may be seasonal or permanent.
