A circuit diagram is a drawing that represents an electrical circuit. They’re used by engineers and electricians to design, analyze, troubleshoot, and make prototypes of electrical or electronic mechanisms. A circuit diagram could either be pictorial or schematic. A schematic circuit diagram uses standardized symbols to show the circuit’s components, while a pictorial circuit diagram uses images.

To read a circuit diagram, it helps to be familiar with standard symbols. Generally, a circuit diagram is made up of the following elements:
  • Components. These include resistors, capacitors, transistors, inductors, and more. Each has a unique symbol.
  • Connections. These are lines that connect the components together.
  • Power sources. Batteries and other power supplies are marked with a specific symbol.
  • Ground symbol. This identifies the ground terminals within the circuit diagram.
  • Labels and values. Certain specifications and values are also indicated in the diagram.

Here are key points to consider when reading a circuit diagram:

  • dentify each component and how it relates to the overall circuit diagram. 
  • Locate power sources and ground points. 
  • Follow the lines to understand the direction of the current flows.
  • Check the labels and refer to available documentation for the circuit’s specifications and operation.

Once you have your components and symbols laid out on the whiteboard, you can connect them with lines. Type L to add a line. Change the weight and color of the line and choose how you want the endpoints to look. Then, drag the end of the line towards an element on the circuit diagram. Points will appear on the element, where you can connect the line.

If you need to add a lightbulb to your circuit diagram, search for a lightbulb icon or load symbol in our elements library. Add your preferred icon or image, then add connecting lines to fit it into your diagram.
