Frequently asked questions

  • To lock a PDF, you can add a secure password when you download, save, or export a PDF file through a PDF editor.
  • One of the best ways to keep unauthorized individuals from copying or printing your PDF file is to password protect it with a complex password, store it in a secure device or cloud folder, or, if you must share, share it only with people you trust.
  • The password suggestion in Canva is strong and hard to guess. But if you prefer to create your own, make sure that it has at least 8 characters, and uses a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid common words or personal details, like birthdays and names.

Important note: Canva doesn’t store passwords for exported files. If you forget the password, you need to export the PDF again and set a new password.

  • Password protection provides some level of security for your sensitive information, but it’s not 100% guaranteed to prevent unauthorized access or editing. How secure your password-protected PDF is depends on factors such as the:

    • Strength of your password
    • Security settings & level of access provided
    • Vulnerabilities in password sharing & encryption

You can make your PDF file more secure by choosing a strong password, encrypting your password and document, regularly updating passwords for previously shared files, and avoiding sharing passwords on unsecured channels (e.g., email, chat).
