Simplifying the intricacies and relationships between a concept and related ideas can be quite tricky. Using a concept map, you can visualize and connect ideas and bring those abstract concepts to life so it’s easier for your audience to digest and pick up the most important points.
While explaining complicated concepts is not easy, creating a brilliant concept map can be with the right tools. Canva’s intuitive interface and drag and drop design features allow you to create high-quality and visually-appealing concept maps. Choose from several pre-designed layouts and templates and customize it in a few clicks. You can share your design via social media or email, embed it on a webpage or include it as part of a presentation or report.
The goal of a concept map is to simplify complex concepts using circles, boxes and all sorts of shapes and icons to represent ideas and lines to connect them together.
Try mixing things up by using icons, images or illustrations to represent ideas. The awesome part about designing in Canva is you get access to an amazing media library with millions of images, illustrations, icons and vectors you can use. Go to the icons folder found within the elements tab or use the search bar to find something specific. When you’ve chosen one, just drag and drop it where you need it to go. It’s that simple!
Designing in Canva means you won’t ever have to start from a blank page—not with hundreds of templates to use as your springboard. From there, it’s a matter of customizing as much or as little of the elements as you need. To resize a text box, icon or image, simply click and drag its edges. To change a color, select the element or text you want to recolor, click on the color button on the toolbar and choose from the ready-made palette or use the color wheel to pick any other hue.
Fonts are also super easy to work with. There are more than a hundred free fonts you can choose from to convey your style, purpose, personality or brand identity. Edit the pre-made text by changing the font type, size, color, alignment or emphasis.
Since concept maps are often used in brainstorming or problem-solving scenarios, you might want to get ideas or new angles from your team or colleagues. Canva allows you to share an editable version of your design so anyone you send the link to can view it or add their own edits and comments regardless of their physical location. Since Canva designs are all up on the cloud, they need only log in to their account from any computer’s web browser to access and edit the design.
To resize a shape or line in your concept map, first click on the shape or line you want to resize. A dotted outline with 4 circles on each corner will appear around the element. Click, hold and drag on any of the 4 circles to resize your shape or line. You might also need to zoom in on an element such really thin lines to make adjusting it easier. Once you’re happy with the new shape or line size, release the circle.
All of the layouts in our library are free to use as many times as you like. There are also a large range of free images to choose from, otherwise all premium photography, vectors and illustrations in our stock library is all priced at just $1. There are no other fees to use Canva.
